For d.j. I. Wright, it all began back in September of 1996. As a collegiate undergraduate, studying creative writing, he went to his first electronic music show in Southern California. At the outside jungle area, I. Wright witnessed and danced to the original, old school jungle sounds of DJs R.A.W., Heretic, Fusion, Monk, Curious and Raymond Roker. Ever since witnessing that first night of jungle music, he wanted to bring the bass to the people. By the fall of 1997, his love for jungle/drum and bass and dancing had evolved into collecting drum and bass records and learning to mix on friends' turntables. On the origin of d.j. name "I. Wright", the artist reveals "Mixing is like writing, and each new mix is a new poem or story I tell." As a jungle and drum and bass d.j., I. Wright began collecting jump up, tech step and ragga singles and E.P.'s on the Metalheadz, Ram, Reinforced, No-U Turn as well as jump-up bizness on the Da' Lick, Joker, Urban Takeover, Fresh Kuttz, Dope Dragon and the Congo Natty labels. Even without turntables, I. Wright was practicing on his friends' tables, playing house parties in Isla Vista through the Spring of '98, and he was already pushing his sound via mix tapes, such as "The Human Experiment", "Project X" and "My Habitat".
By June of 1998, as he graduated college, he got tables and created "Plastic Addicts," an event production company and DJ collective, with the support of friend d.j. Sparkle. The original concept of Plastic Addicts came from I. Wright's radio show on KJUC, the AM sister station of Santa Barbara's only independent radio station, KCSB. This was the beginning of I. Wright's career in radio broadcasting. In 1998, Plastic Addicts was the first local underground production company to have an online, updated website for growing numbers of Plastic Addicts fans. I. Wright and Sparkle threw many local shows, at many different locations, contributing to the growing popularity and influence of the Plastic Addicts on the local underground music scene. In 1998-9, along with M.C. L.M. Wreck, I. Wright helped to run a weekly Wednesday night called "The Blue Lounge" at the club formerly known as the Madhouse (now Indochine'), on State St. featuring down-tempo with concoctions of atmospheric drum and bass, jazz, and hip-hop from I.Wright, while Sparkle provided loungey house and downtempo for customers. With the success and experience of running a weekly night on State St. as well as throwing underground shows in the Santa Barbara, I. Wright was ready to turn his attention towards fulfilling a deeper dream.
I. Wright began to throw "Strictly DnB" an all-drum and bass monthly night, in the 805 area code with his friend and fellow junglist Vinnie, a.k.a. Mad Huban of the Beatnix Labs (http://beatnixlabs.com ). This drum and bass night was the only and longest running monthly drum and bass show from 2001-2003, culminating with Strictly DnB 7 in February 2003. Originally conceived as an arena for local drum and bass artists to showcase their talents, and drum and bass heads to get their fix of the music they are so addicted to. Strictly DnB returned one final time in February 2006, in memorial of the great fallen junglist soldier Grizzly(R.I.P.) with Tabu (jungle voodoo), Mad Huban, Jaekwon, Sam I Am and I. Wright.
